How to Fix Your Key Fob

In the world of technology, it is easy to take things for granted. Take your key fob for example. This keyless remote can help you get in your car, open your trunk, and may even start your car with ease. When you key fob stops working for one reason or another, you suddenly realise how much easier this little remote made your life.

Now you are stuck unlocking your car with the actual key, struggling to get it turned just right. You can no longer start your car from a distance and allow it to warm up a bit as you check out in the store. Once your key fob stops working, it becomes a very important part of your life.

There are many reasons why your key fob may stop working, whether it is because the signal is lost, the battery is dead, or the remote is just old and worn out. Luckily, you can fix your key fob by yourself if need be, or you can hire a professional from 24/7 Emergency Locksmith to help you get your key fob working again and you on your way.

If you want to attempt to fix your fob yourself, we will give you some tips to help make the process easier for you. Before you start taking apart your key fob, you will want to make sure you key fob is actually the problem. If you have an extra key fob, check to see if it works. If it does, the original fob is the issue, but if not, it could be an electrical or mechanical problem with the door locks. Once you know that the fob is the issue, continue to the next steps.

Change the Battery

Your key fob problems may be as simple as changing the battery. Try swapping the old battery for a new and seeing if the fob will work. If an old battery was the problem, than the fix was easy and you can carry on with your day! If not, you may want to try something else to fix the issue.

Reprogramming Your Fob

Try reprogramming your key. To do this you will follow these steps:

  1. Get in your car with the fob and key and shut the door.
  2. Turn your key to the on position but don’t actually start your car, press the lock button on the fob, and then turn the car back off.
  3. Repeat three times. On the last cycle, leave your car in the on position.
  4. Wait for the locks to sound and press the lock button again.
  5. Turn the key to the off position to end the programming.

This is just one method to reprogram your key fob. If this does not work for you, feel free to give 24/7 Emergency Locksmith a call. We can get your remote reprogrammed or get you a new fob and program it for you. Contact us today and get your key fob working again!
