5 Simple Tips to Keep Your Car Safe from Thieves

Sometimes, we go on auto pilot when it comes to our car. We’re used to driving to many of the same places and used to perhaps parking in the same location each and every night. And even though habit and routine can be good things, it’s always a good idea to make sure that you’re always keeping your car as safe from potential thieves as possible. Your vehicle is a big investment!

Here are a few tips you can keep in mind to give you that extra edge against car thieves.

Avoid Leaving Valuables In Your Car

We know, we know. It can be a pain to always have to remove things from your car at the end of the day, but if you’re leaving something in sight that may be of some value, it may catch the eye of someone who’s willing to break into your car to get it.

Park Where There’s Light

Parking where it’s well-lit is always a good idea, no matter where you are. If your home doesn’t have any external lighting, perhaps it’s time to start looking into adding some.

Lock Your Car

Seems pretty simple, right? We can’t tell you how many times we’ve seen people post on social media about reminding people to lock their car doors because they just had something stolen overnight from their own unlocked car.

Shut Your Windows and Sun Roof

Again, a pretty simple fix. But, if a thief can get into your car easily, they are probably going to go for it. If they have trouble getting in, the odds are better that they will move on.

Consider an Anti-Theft Device

Many new cars already come with some sort of alarm or theft deterrent built in, which is great. If your car doesn’t have one, or if you simply want to upgrade what you already have, it can pay off to be overly safe.

As always, we’re here for you if you find yourself in a lock out situation. Call us (484) 891-1922.

Signs Your Ignition is Failing

The ignition is one of the most important components of your car. This is the system that starts your car by creating a spark in in the cylinder of the engine. The ignition is something that many people do not think too much about, until their car suddenly doesn’t start. There are many issues that can occur with your ignition, putting you in a sticky situation.

However, there are many signs that your ignition might be failing before it actually does. If you notice any of the following issues, you vehicle’s ignition may be slowly failing. If your vehicle is older, your ignition may wear out sooner than later. Know what to look for in order to keep your ignition from failing without warning.

Trouble Starting

Having to turn the engine over multiple times before your car actually starts is a huge red flag. Having trouble starting your car should be a major sign that your ignition is beginning to fail. If your engine does not turn over at all, it may be a different problem.

Trouble Turning Key

If your key does not turn in the ignition, your ignition is likely failing. When your key fails to turn in the ignition the first time, be sure to check to make sure that your ignition lock is not engaged. To do this, turn your steering wheel back and forth. If your ignition has excessive wear, it may be preventing the key from aligning with the keyhole.

Stalling

Another sign that your ignition is failing is that your car is stalling. Most stalling issues with ignition problems will occur while the car is actually traveling, not just when it is sitting in idle. If your car begins to stall while driving it, getting your ignition checked is a good idea.

Dashboard Lights Flicker

While this sign may seem strange, and is often uncommon, if your dashboard light begin to flicker, your ignition could be starting to fail. If you do have an ignition problem you are likely to notice your dashboard lights flickering while driving your vehicle.

These are a few of the many signs that your ignition could be failing. You want to be aware of these signs and watch for them as your car ages. Being stuck with an ignition problem is never fun, but 24/7 Emergency Locksmith can help. Not only do we provide house and car lockout and other lock services, but we can also repair your ignition! Spring Car Care Tips from 24/7 Emergency Locksmith

Spring has sprung in the Lehigh Valley
Spring in the Lehigh Valley means different things to different people. To some, it means getting ready for trips to Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom. For others, it may mean getting to the Lehigh Valley Zoo or lacing up shoes for runs along some of the beautiful trails in the area.

No matter what it means to you, you won’t have a good spring if you don’t take care of your vehicle. And, thankfully, it’s not that difficult.

Here are a few Spring car care tips!

Change your oil and filter

Just think of it as spring cleaning for your car as well. Everyone knows that it’s a good idea to change their car’s oil at the suggested intervals to keep it running efficiently and keeping gas consumption at a desirable level.

Replace your wiper blades

Your windshield wipers take a beating throughout the winter months so it might be time to get a pair of new ones.

Check your lighting

When’s the last time you turned on your car’s lights, including the four-ways, and walked around your car to see if they all work? Never? Well, it’s time to take a look.

Check your tires

Tires also go through a lot of stress throughout the winter months. If you’re not someone who regularly switches between winter and summer tires, it’s a good idea to do a visual check of them and to check the pressure once the weather gets a bit nicer.

Give your windshield a once over

Winter roads are full of salt and debris and other items that can put a beating on your windshield. Take a look at your windshield for any small cracks that could present a problem down the road. If you do spot a crack, it’s important (and most times less expensive) to fix it early.

Gadgets to Help You Not Lose Your Keys

How many times have you been in a hurry to drive somewhere or really needed to get in the house, but oops, can’t find your keys? Our guess is dozens of times. Recently there have been many products coming out to solve this issue every person faces on a daily basis. Some of the best have come from sites like Kickstarter or indiegogo and are becoming wildly popular.

Tile Mate

Easily the most recognizable of the group is tile. This company creates a variety of trackers that can be attached to key chains, backpacks or purses. Once you get the product all you need to is set up the app created by tile and you’re all set to find your keys, phone, wallet!

TrackR bravo

Another popular company is TrackR. They also sells a small tracking device that you can attached to any keychain or throw in a purse or wallet. The TrackR products do have the interesting feature of doubling as a phone finder, press on your TrackR device and your phone will start ringing. In that regard the more you have the better, you’ll never lose your phone or keys again.

Key Ringer

Now this one may not be the most innovative or new product but you better bet it gets the job done. The KeyRinger XL by Key Ringer is one of the loudest lost key finders on the market. As long as you have one of the two in a set you can press the button and the other will start ringing, very loudly. However if the volume is an issue it is reprogrammable to be softer, or louder if you’d really like.

How Keys Are Made (and How 24/7 Emergency Locksmith Can Make Yours)

An enigma to some and a daily craft for others, the art of key making takes many different forms. Keys cade be duplicated, made from the using just the lock itself, by cutting them with a laser, among many other possibilities. Each way is unique to how it actually pops out a key.

Key duplicators are exactly what they sound like; they make copies of keys from existing ones. Something like this is used when you lose a spare or just need another set of house keys for a boyfriend or girlfriend. The machine uses the existing key as a guide to cut a blank one by grinding it down to match the grooves of the old key.

Code cutters are used when someone loses a key, the most common reason really. How can you make a key from a lock? You have a machine that measures the depth of each groove in the lock and then can be cut into a new blank key. Some keys actually have their ‘key code’ printed on them, as well as some locks, making this process much quicker. Replacing a lost car key is similar although is a little more difficult to key the key code as they have to use your VIN, make, and model of the car to figure it out.

Laser cutters are used for a key that works in a different type of lock. Not all locks use a tumbler method; some use a slider system that requires the keys to be based off of thickness of groves on the side of the key as well. These keys are meant for cars so people can’t use generic keys to break into them, but need a real key to actually work. Funny enough no lasers are used in this machine; it is actually a high-speed bit that uses the ‘key code’ to create grooves and depth at the same time.

24/7 Emergency Locksmith can help you if you need a new key, on the spot. Call us at (484) 891-1922 for 24/7 service.

Tips to Prevent Burglary While on Vacation

Going on vacation is supposed to be relaxing and enjoyable not stressful and worrisome, so why should you have to think about whether or not your homestead is going to be ok while you are gone? You don’t need a high tech security system, which is what most people think. By implementing some of these small tips and tricks you can enjoy that nice sea breeze knowing your house is safe and sound.

Stop Newspaper Delivery and Hold Mail

One of the most obvious signs that someone is out of town is when their mail and newspapers begin to pile up. If you stop deliveries or have someone else pick them up for you your house won’t stick out, it’ll just be another house on the block.

Set Timers On Your Lights

Another thing a burglar will be looking for is whether or not there are lights on in the house for a few days. A way to avoid keeping your lights on the whole time you are on vacation is to set up a few timers. Have them in some main rooms of the house, kitchen, livening room, and maybe a bedroom and voila it looks like someone is home at night!

Don’t Post on Social Media

I know I know, everyone is always very eager to let everyone on Facebook and Twitter know the exciting place they are going on vacation. However, when you let your friends and family know where you’re going you also let all the burglars and thieves of the world know too. Just wait until you get back and post all your pictures from the comfort and security of your living room couch.
